On the phone

What is a telephone answering service?

A telephone answering service is an outside team that picks up a company's calls, takes a message and passes it on, usually charged per call or per minute. It covers the phone when the office cannot. What it hands back is a message, and the work inside that message still waits for the company.

What is the difference between an answering service and an AI phone assistant?

An answering service takes the message. An AI phone assistant finishes the task: it books the appointment in the calendar, answers the routine question outright, and passes on only what genuinely needs a person. The difference shows in what is waiting for you afterwards, not in who picked up.

When is a human answering service the better choice?

When the calls are sensitive, unusual or valuable enough that a person should hear them. A trained human handles distress, negotiation and ambiguity better than software does. Plenty of companies run both: software on the routine volume, people on the calls where being heard by a person is the point.
